Driving and Charging Electric Cars in Leeds

Leeds City Council has taken numerous steps to support the EV revolution. It launched a permit scheme that allows free parking for Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEV). All fully electric and certain hybrid cars qualify as a ULEV. This means that if you have a permit, then you can park for free in any Council operated pay and display location (on-street or in car parks).

In September 2020, the council also introduced a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in its efforts to reduce pollution and protect the public’s health. It also has been put in place to encourage residents and businesses to transition to cleaner vehicles, such as the electric car. The CAZ covers most of the area within Leed’s outer ring road, and any vehicles that do not comply will be obliged to pay a charge each day to enter this area. Beneficially, electric vehicles are exempt from this charge.

Leeds City Council is also home to the biggest fleet of electric vehicles of any local authority within the United Kingdom. It hopes to use only ULEVs by the year 2030. As of 2021, there were 335 EVs in operation.

The city with a population of around 800,000 has comparatively strong support for the EV compared to other regions. Indeed, Leeds has a higher percentage of private vehicles registered as electric than the national average. Furthermore, Leeds had the most available car charging points in the whole of Yorkshire, with 227 as of the end of 2021.

Clearly, the city of Leeds is taking great strides in support of the EV and is a great place to own and use an electric vehicle.
