Research has found that Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire are on the cusp of an EV boom. This could see over 200,000 EVs on the streets by 2030. Furthermore, figures released by Midlands Connect and WSP indicate that Stoke-on-Trent will witness a substantial increase in the use of electric cars in the next eight years.
Staffordshire County Council has announced that they recognise the benefits of using EVs, especially for improving air quality, and understand that demand for charging infrastructure is increasing. It is therefore developing a strategy to implement a coordinated network of additional charging stations across Staffordshire county (including Stoke-on-Trent) to assist with the switch to electric. This will involve considerations of the most needed charging points (such as rapid and fast chargers) and in what locations these points will be most beneficial.
Numerous Midlands government authorities — including Stoke-on-Trent City council — are also bidding for nearly £1 million of funding for electric vehicle charging points. If this plan goes smoothly, Stoke-on-Trent will be on course to gain an extra 56 standard and four rapid charging points.
In the middle of 2022, councillors backed plans for a Clean Air Zone (CAZ) to be implemented within Stoke-on-Trent, a move that will see fees introduced for certain vehicles entering the zone that do not meet certain emission standards. Electric cars will be exempt from a charge for entering the CAZ. It will cover the city centre and Victoria Road in Fenton to help improve air quality levels.
With a CAZ set to be implemented in Stoke-on-Trent and governmental strategies in place to improve the electric charging network, now is a fantastic time for using and charging an EV in Stoke-on-Trent.
